The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.

The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us.

If you thought that a few days ago, the idea of being stuck on autopilot sounded ridiculous, you’re about to be shocked. As we are all well aware, the internet has created a society of “auto-tune artists”, with a wide array of options and a very wide range of tunings. What this means is that we now have an almost limitless amount of ability to create whatever we want to. In a sense, this is a good thing.

That’s why it is so disturbing, however, to be stuck on autopilot. We are so fixated on what we do, and what we do well, and what we do not, that we rarely even notice the things that are happening in life around us. We have a tendency to think that we’re doing things for a reason, and that it is important that we do things in the same way.

But we are not doing things for a reason. A good reason would be to help out a friend, or to do something good for someone. There are so many ways to do good, we really don’t need to put in a list of good reasons for doing something. The answer to the problem of being on autopilot is one of awareness. If we were to take a moment to remind ourselves of these things every day, we will start to notice and take in the reality of our lives.

I am the type of person who will organize my entire home (including closets) based on what I need for vacation. Making sure that all vital supplies are in one place, even if it means putting them into a carry-on and checking out early from work so as not to miss any flights!
